If you’re in the market for a new carpet, it’s a smart move to get to know the types of carpet first. After all, purchasing a new carpet is a serious expenditure and by familiarizing yourself with the wide array of carpet types, you ensure that you get the right one for your home, giving you the best value for your money. These are the different types of carpets:

The Cut Pile

Considered as one of the most popular types of carpet is the textured cut pile. By cutting the looped carpet fibers at the top to the same height, yarn bundles standing straight are produced. These are then tufted to some extent to creating a thick, luxurious look. Cut pile carpets offer ample cushion for the foot but are more susceptible to crushing than other types.

Level Loop Pile

The level loop pile type is ideal for areas in the home which are frequently passed on such as doorways and hallways. Also called the loop pile, this carpet type consists of loops of similar length, which is woven into carpet backing. Due to its even, strong loops, the loop carpet is very durable, and is effective at hiding footprint or vacuum marks and dust particles.

Saxony

If you want a carpet that looks luxuriantly supple and can blend well as an interior decor for your home, Saxony is a good choice. The Saxony is created from tufts of heavy yarn, tightly twisted, and then softened and straightened with heat. It lends elegance to any room, but on the downside, shows every footprint or vacuum mark.

The Textured Saxony

A slight variation of the Saxony carpet is the textured Saxony which is more heavily twisted and textured. This carpet variety spells durability and beauty at the same time, making it a versatile choice. Its accents and highlights are also good in disguising any marks and dirt.

The Cut & Loop Pile

A combination of the first two carpet types is the cut and loop pile. With this variety, looped and cut fibers in different lengths are used and a mishmash of textures and patterns is created. It has less durability and resistance than the level loop but it does have a softer feel and look , making it ideal for low-traffic living areas.

The Berber

Made from wool fibers or nylon-olefin fibers, Berber carpets got their origins from the Berber tribe in Northwestern Africa. They are fast gaining in popularity because they are highly durable and versatile, and can hide tracks and marks well. Berber carpets are typically in off-white to light camel colors, and can either be cut-pile or loop-pile.

The Frieze

Consisting of twisted fibers that are woven together in cut pile manner, a Frieze carpet is ideal for high traffic areas. The reason for this is that the individual twisted fibers curl in various directions, and are therefore effective in concealing dirt, footprints, and even vacuum marks. Frieze carpets are available in a wide range of colors and basic patterns.

Velvet or Plush

The terms velvet and plush always evoke an image of sophistication and luxury and it is no different with carpets. Plush carpets consist of tufts of yarn cut at the same length and then lightly twisted. Perfect for formal settings, this carpet type is elegantly uniform in color all throughout and provides soft cushioning.

Choosing the kind of carpet that best fits your needs and resources can be a bit daunting. But with some knowledge on the different types of carpet, it’s easier to come up with a shortlist and then selecting the best.
