Overview of Cisco Commands in IOS

Cisco Systems Inc. is a company which develops and comes out with various routers and switches for computer networking. Both hardware and software are being developed by this company. One of the software which is IOS, which stands for Internetwork Operating System, is vastly used in all of Cisco own routers and network switches. It is a package of routing, switching and networking integrated into an operating system (OS) that functions in multitasking. Cisco commands for this software are running on command line type of user interface.

 

There are different modes in this that provides fixed multiple words of Cisco commands in IOS. One available type is the global configuration mode. This mode offers commands to change the system’s configuration. While in the interface configuration mode, it allows user to make some alterations to a specific interface. Within both modes, all commands contains a privilege level where only certain users with assigned privilege will be able to have the access to it. For example the command will look like this.

 

Privileged Mode

enable – get to privileged mode

disable – get to user mode

enable password – sets privileged mode password

enable secret – sets encrypted privileged mode password

 

Other examples of general commands are:

reload – restarts the router

sh clock – shows date and time on router

sh history – shows the history of user’s commands

sh users – shows users connected to the router

clear counters – clear interface counters

no debug all – turns off all debugging

 

Cisco commands are easy to use and understand.

With the help of lists and guides, one will find it a reliable tool to configure networking hardware. Since it is used for networking, security is highly recommended for implementation. The IOS devices are using the AAA security model which the AAA stands for authentication, authorisation and accounting.
