There’s a new craze in the mobile cyberspace town, and it’s called – the Fourth Generation Communications System (4G). 4G wireless network is another installment in the generations of the wireless networks, proceeding with 3G and the rest of the other standards (2G, 1G, 0G). So what is 4G by the way? 4G is the newest mobile standard that allows one to have an ultra-fast browsing speed in the internet through his or her phone.

Actually, there are two kinds of 4G wireless networks. The first kind is called as
LTE or Long Term Evolution. LTE was first launched in public at the cities of Oslo, Norway, Stockholm and Sweden. The other one is called WiMax, or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. WiMax is much more popular than the former, having been already launched in more than 148 countries with 568 fixed networks and is still counting.

What is WiMax

Briefly described, WiMax is an IP (Internet Protocol) based wireless broadband access technology. Also known as IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) 802.16, this wireless system provides quality performance like that of Wi-Fi networks. WiMax can offer broadband wireless access of up to 30 miles or 50 kilometers for fixed stations and 3 to 10 miles or 5 – 15 kilometers for mobile ones. Without a doubt, it is undeniably faster than Wi-Fi or otherwise known as IEEE 802.11, as having only a meager 100 – 300 feet or 30 – 100 meters area coverage.

For business and metropolitan areas, it is best to refer WiMax. With its capability to cater to a large area, this new wireless broadband access technology is indeed preferable for populated areas where usual network congestion is most likely to occur, as this will answer to that problem.

WiMax is much like that of Wi-Fi, with the same data rates supported and quality of service being offered. However, with WiMax, network interference is lessened as well as it can be operated on both licensed and unlicensed frequencies.

In the United States, there are 23 currently active WiMax digital wireless networks. But network companies such as Sprint and Nextel have shown interest to use WiMax for its 4G wireless network. Now, that’s really something to look forward to with a smile.
